WUSD Board of Trustees

Wiseburn Board of Trustees receive no compensation.
They perform all services to the Wiseburn community as volunteers.

Nelson Martinez
Nelson Martinez  ·  President  ·  2005 - Present

Mr. Nelson Martinez is a long-time Del Aire resident and he attended Wiseburn schools as a student, graduating from both Anza Elementary and Dana Middle School. Mr. Martinez is a Senior Project Manager with a school construction management firm. He has volunteered as an Aviation Little League Baseball coach in Del Aire, following his own participation in that league, as well as AYSO, as a player. Mr. Martinez is married to Helen and has two young sons who will in time attend Wiseburn schools. He is eagerly looking forward to serving on the Board of Trustees and contributing to the Wiseburn community.

Roger Banuelos
Roger Bañuelos  ·  Vice President/Clerk  ·  2009 - Present

Mr. Bañuelos has lived in the Wiseburn Community for nearly twenty-two years. He and his wife have four sons, all of which attended and have promoted from Wiseburn K-8 schools.  Their two oldest sons graduated from Da Vinci Science and are currently enrolled at UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley.  Their two youngest sons are currently enrolled at Da Vinci Science with one a Senior and the other a Freshman.

Roger is proud of the community in which he lives and believes in volunteering to make it better and stronger. Some of the local organizations and committees he has devoted his time to are:

  • Board Member - Wiseburn Education Foundation
  • Board Member Representative – Los Angeles County School Trustees Association (LACSTA)
  • Board Member Representative – Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization

  • Coach and Parent Volunteer - AYSO Teams
  • Assistant Coach and Parent Volunteer - Wiseburn Little League Teams

This same commitment to his community is why he serves on the Wiseburn Unified School District Board of Trustees and believes in prioritizing student success, creating opportunities and preserving a financially sound district.

Mr. Bañuelos holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in Civil Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix (UOP). In his professional career, he is the President of Element Consulting, a construction management company dedicated to improving learning environments for students in the education sector and has served on the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Board of Directors in the capacity of Chairman of its Membership Committee.

JoAnne Kaneda
JoAnne Kaneda  ·  Member  ·  2001 - 2009;  2014 - Present

Ms. Kaneda has lived in the Wiseburn community for over 20 years. She is proud and humbled to apply her life experience, education, and professional aerospace knowledge to make strong decisions for the Wiseburn Unified School District (WUSD).

Ms. Kaneda grew up in a bilingual, ethnic household where she learned to be passionate about family, education, diversity, and community. Her blended family includes her husband and 4 sons, all of whom have rich personal and educational achievements. Ms. Kaneda has a BS from Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from Drake University, as well as completing the UCLA Executive Engineering Management Program. Her work experience includes executive management of technology systems and direction of large technical aerospace projects. She has first-hand knowledge to manage schedules, budgets, teams, and facilities, and applies these leadership skills for our community as a WUSD Board Member. Ms. Kaneda is also an experienced, certificated teacher who knows the necessity of blending classroom goals with available budget to deliver the best education for kids and community. Her combination of classroom and industry know-how ensures WUSD budget and curriculum accountability with community input.

During her years of board service Ms. Kaneda contributed to our community in multiple ways:

  • Board president for three terms
  • Board vice-president for three terms
  • WUSD Board representative to the Technology and Budget committees
  • Vice President of the Local Public School Funding Authority Board
  • WUSD Board representative to the WUSD/DaVinci Partnership committee
  • WUSD achieved the grade of "A" in Academics, Safety and Diversity in a national survey
  • All WUSD schools are recognized as California Distinguished Schools
  • Volunteered for AYSO soccer, both Aviation and Wiseburn Little Leagues
  • Wiseburn Education Foundation member that teamed to create our first Rock Around the Block community fundraiser
  • Actively supported our successful unification and school improvement campaigns

Ms. Kaneda strongly supports the Board's purpose to lead the district through the unprecedented health and education decisions in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board's first commitment must be to safety for our students, teachers, staff and community. In addition to a steadfast safety mandate, Ms. Kaneda endorses a community of excellence and inclusion through the world-class curriculum and achievement standards our Board delivers to our community.

Neil Goldman
Neil Goldman  ·  Member  ·  2015 - Present

Dr. Neil Goldman is a long-term Del Aire resident and has a rich history of involvement in the District. His two daughters are Wiseburn alumni, and former wife (and still good friend), Donna Goldman taught kindergarten at Juan de Anza for many years. Neil has actively served the district in many ways over three decades, including:

  • President of the Wiseburn Education Foundation
  • Founding member of Rock around the Block
  • District Budget Review Committee member
  • Member of the Juan de Anza Parent Advisory Council
  • Worked to support the Wiseburn Unification and Bond measures for education for our students
  • Future Wiseburn High School Committee member

Dr. Goldman owns GCS, Inc., an organizational development and research company, and has consulted with over 400 organizations in 49 states nationwide. He has also served the District in the following organizational and research capacities:

  • Facilitator for joint Wiseburn/Da Vinci board planning meetings.
  • Helping with the design of the student, parent and teacher surveys. 
  • Conducting Juan de Anza school site research 
  • Focus group research and communications planning for Da Vinci Innovation Academy 
  • District-wide research on our desired high school (Community Survey)

Dr. Goldman brings an understanding of education and management. He holds a doctorate degree in education and a master’s degree in business administration.

Rebecca Hamburg-Cappy
Rebecca Hamburg-Cappy  ·  Member  ·  2022 - Present

The Wiseburn Unified School District Board of Trustees appointed Wiseburn resident Ms. Rebecca Hamburg-Cappy as a provisional member of the Board in February 2022. Prior to her appointment on the Board of Trustees, Ms. Hamburg-Cappy served in several prominent leadership roles across the District. Ms. Hamburg-Cappy is a long-time Board member of the Wiseburn Education Foundation, having served as the organization’s interim Executive Director, Vice President, Director of Fundraising, and Director of Community Relations over the past five years. She currently serves as the Wiseburn USD representative on the Southwest Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) Community Advisory Committee. This committee provides critical input on the development of a local plan for providing special education and related services for students with disabilities and their families in the 12 school districts and 16 charter schools serviced by the SELPA. In addition to her relevant community engagement, Ms. Hamburg-Cappy also brings her perspective as a parent to her role. She has two sons who are currently enrolled in Wiseburn elementary schools.

Ms. Hamburg-Cappy is an attorney and nonprofit executive. She is the Chief Network Officer for the California Donor Table, where she leads individual donor network strengthening and expansion as well as foundation engagement and alignment work for CDT and their related entities. Previously, she was the founder and principal consultant for Rebecca Hamburg Consulting, where she empowered nonprofits and foundations with the tools and knowledge to achieve their vision for a better world. Ms. Hamburg-Cappy served as the West Coast Director for Alliance for Justice and Program Director of the National Employment Lawyers Association. She also spent several years litigating cases on behalf of public and private employees around the country, as well as victims of civil and human rights abuses in the U.S. and around the world.

Ms. Hamburg-Cappy received her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and her B.A. in political science (with honors) from the University of California, San Diego. She is an active member of the State Bar of California.
