WUSD Reopening Update

Reopening Dates for Hybrid Instruction

  • March 8 for grades TK-2
  • March 15 for grades 3-5

Wiseburn families and friends,

Planning continues for our reopening on March 8, and it has been a community-wide effort. We are pleased to share that nearly every family responded to our form to select either distance or in-person learning for your student(s). That cooperation helps us keep our planning moving, and we thank each of you for your partnership. Please continue reading for more updates on our reopening efforts.

Upcoming Changes for All TK-5 Students

Starting Monday, March 8, all students in grades TK-5 will follow the new TK-5 schedules.

This means all TK-5 students will be:

  1. placed on our new hybrid or distance learning schedules as shared in our District Reopening Guide, and
  2. placed with the teacher they will have for the remainder of the year. (More information on teacher placements will be coming from the school sites next week.)

Please note: starting March 8, TK-2 will begin both the hybrid and distance learning schedules. Grades 3-5 will continue distance learning, but will do so with the new distance learning schedule for the sake of consistency. Then, on March 15, 3-5th grade students who have enrolled in hybrid instruction will begin the new hybrid schedule and will begin attending school in-person for either their AM or PM cohort.

As we noted in our last communication, unfortunately, due to staffing and student participation in either learning program, there will be some shuffling of classes and students may be placed with a different teacher for the remainder of the year.

We are doing our best to maintain current teacher/class assignments as possible, but we recognize the difficulty of this situation on both our students and our teachers. We are committed to and confident in our ability to support our families during this return to school and any associated changes, and will have counseling and other resources available on site and for our distance learners.

TK-5 School Site Informational Meetings

Each TK-5 school site will be hosting meetings to share their school site procedures for hybrid instruction. Please see below for dates and times, as also shared by your school site.

Juan de Anza Elementary School Parent/Caretaker Meeting
  • ABOUT: In this meeting, new procedures and policies will be reviewed. Please click here to submit any questions that you may have.
  • WHEN: Tuesday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. and a repeat meeting on Wednesday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m.
  • WHERE: Via Zoom
138th St. School Town Hall
  • ABOUT: At this meeting, the 138th St. School team will review their safety protocols and give parents an opportunity to submit questions either prior to this meeting via this Google Form or during the meeting via the chat.
  • WHEN: Tuesday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. and a repeat meeting on Wednesday, March 3 at 11:00 a.m.
  • WHERE: Via Zoom
Juan Cabrillo Elementary School Town Hall
  • ABOUT: The Cabrillo team will be joined by district administrators and members of the CARE counseling team to go through the details of reopening for Cabrillo. This will include information on safety measures, entry and exit procedures, recess, and more. If you are unable to attend, Cabrillo will be posting the information Wednesday for families to review. If you would like to submit a particular question in advance, please write your question here, to be sure it is addressed.
  • WHEN: Tuesday, March 2 at 5 p.m. and a repeat meeting on Wednesday March 3 at 12 p.m.

District Reopening Guide

Critical to our ability to bring any students back is our strict health and safety protocol. To review our policies and procedures, please see our District Reopening Guide below, either in English or Spanish:

Food Services Changes Starting March 8


  • Grab and Go meals provided at their respective school site on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
  • Wednesday meal pick-up at Dana Middle School.
  • AM & PM cohorts may pick-up meals at dismissal at 11 AM and 3 PM.
  • Students will not be allowed to eat on campus at this time.


  • Dana Middle School will be open for drive-thru meals Monday through Friday 11:30 AM-1:00 PM.


  • Weekend meal pick-up only at Dana Middle School on Fridays.

School sites will only serve meals for students enrolled and attending their specific hybrid cohort for the specific instructional day. School sites will not allow meal pick up for students attending another site or distance learning.

Updated information regarding travel

We wanted to call attention to an update to travel and quarantine recommendations, particularly as we approach reopening and spring break shortly after. The current guidance for quarantining after non-essential travel has been updated, and we ask that all WUSD families adhere to the current LACDPH Travel Advisory and Guidance (updated 2/3/21) and the LACDPH Health Officer Order (updated 2/10/21).

This means recreational travel outside of the state requires all members of your household to self-quarantine for 10 days before your student can return to school.

  • If you have traveled out of state or internationally, you must self-quarantine for 10 days after arrival home, and before returning to school.
  • If you attended a high-risk gathering, you must self-quarantine for 10 days after the event. Please note that the health order states that all private gatherings must be held outdoors among no more than 3 households and no more than 15 people.

Additional guidelines from the LACDPH Travel Advisory and Guidance:

  • Avoid all non-essential travel and stay within 120 miles of your residence.
  • If you are traveling internationally, you are required to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States. For more information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Travel Requirements.
