Renaming Process Progress

We are approaching the final stages of our renaming process. Through community dialogue and deliberation, we have narrowed our focus for renaming our schools to either names after geographic areas or after an individual.

In addition to the name submissions from our students, we now invite our wider community to formally submit name ideas. This survey will close on Sunday, June 12.

Once the survey closes, we will compile a list of suggested names that meet the identified criteria. This condensed list of suggested names will be presented to the wider community for a final vote.

June 2 Committee Meeting Recap

During the committee’s fifth meeting, the group was presented with the data from the last community renaming survey requesting feedback on the type of name Wiseburn schools should have. Out of 548 responses to our surveys, preference overall for type of name is as follows:

Geographic: 33.8%
Individual: 32.1%
Values/Characteristics: 15.9%
Other: 18.2%

This data was presented to the WUSD School Board, who recommended that the committee and community focus their exploration of names on the Geographic and Individual name types. Therefore, the committee is now tasked with exploring and identifying school name suggestions in the Geographic and Individual categories, while the community is invited to submit name ideas.

Given the volume of name submissions, the committee discussed the criteria for narrowing the name suggestions, in addition to focusing on names that best represent the Wiseburn mission and assurances. A consolidated draft of the criteria based on suggestions from committee members is as follows:

Criteria for New School Name Selection

The criteria for new names for Wiseburn schools requires that names will be:

Of positive, timeless significance and importance within the greater Los Angeles area
Able to be researched heavily with ample documentary evidence
Thematically cohesive across all school sites, while representative of the diversity within the community and distinguishable from other local schools
If an individual, someone who is deceased
If an individual, someone whose life and evolution of character amplifies the Wiseburn mission and assurances* and exemplifies school site values in order to inspire and motivate the student body

*The Wiseburn mission is: Engage. Empower. Elevate. Wiseburn assurances include: Safety, Student-Centered, Future Ready, Community & Collaboration (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), and Organizational Strength (bit.ly/wusd-goals).

The committee will review this edited draft prior to considering the criteria list finalized.
