November 4 Meeting Recap

At the citizens advisory committee’s first meeting on September 30, many members of the committee requested more information about our school namesakes. To accommodate this request, Wiseburn secured a guest speaker who could explore the history of our namesakes in depth and with context.

Dr. Philip Ethington is a Professor of History, Political Science, and Spatial Sciences in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Chair of the History Department, and Faculty in Residence of New North Residential College, at the University of Southern California. With his knowledge of historical figures and interest in nomenclature, Dr. Ethington delivered an informative and engaging presentation (view slides here) to our committee, which you can also watch by clicking the image below:

Group Summaries

Following Dr. Ethington’s presentation, committee members were sorted into breakout rooms based on their school site affiliation. In the breakout rooms, the groups continued discussions started during the previous committee meeting about the personal histories of school site namesakes.

Each group had in-depth discussions and took brief notes on a worksheet that compared whether the histories of the namesakes matched up with each of WUSD’s values. The notes compiled in these values assessment worksheets are intended to aid the community and committee in their decision of whether or not the school should be renamed. Share Your Thoughts

Given what you watched and read above, it’s your turn to share your perspective on the information compiled by the committee. We’d like to know: do you feel the namesakes align with our Wiseburn values? Which school sites do you think should be renamed?
